Professional firms in Miami Beach

Who we work with here

Miami Beach is better known for hotels than for professional services, but its office streets hold a large number of small firms: real estate brokerages, boutique law practices, family offices, architects and designers, and the accountants who serve them. Most have between five and thirty people and no one whose job is IT.

Those firms tend to work from converted retail space, upper floors along Lincoln Road and Alton Road, or offices around 41st Street and Sunset Harbour. Small offices in older buildings often run on whatever network the last tenant left behind.

Local risks

What goes wrong for firms in Miami Beach

The basics are the same everywhere. These are the problems that are sharper here.

  • Flooding and evacuation

Miami Beach is a barrier island. It floods in heavy rain and at high tides, and it is among the first places told to evacuate before a hurricane. Equipment on a ground floor, and backups kept beside it, are both at risk.

  • High-value property closings

Property here changes hands for large sums, arranged by email between buyers, brokers, lawyers and title agents. Criminals watch those threads and send new wiring instructions just before closing.

  • Inherited networks

A small office that took over a previous tenant's router, Wi-Fi password and cabling has no idea who else still has access. It's common, and it's easy to fix.

The rules

What Florida firms are expected to do

  • Florida Information Protection Act

Florida law requires businesses to take reasonable measures to protect personal information. After a breach, affected people must generally be told within 30 days, and a breach affecting 500 or more people in Florida must also be reported to the state Attorney General's office.

  • The Florida Bar

Florida lawyers must make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access to client information. Florida was also the first state to require technology training as part of a lawyer's continuing education.

  • FTC Safeguards Rule

Tax preparers, accountants and many financial firms must keep a written information security program under federal rules, with specific controls such as multi-factor authentication and encryption.

General information, not legal advice. The rules that apply to your firm depend on the work you do and the data you hold.

Questions

What firms in Miami Beach ask us

Our office floods in a bad storm. What should we do about our server?

In most cases, stop depending on it. We move files and email to the cloud, back them up away from the building, and keep only what must stay in the office. Anything that remains goes off the floor and onto battery backup.

We only have six people. Are we too small?

No. Our plans start at five people, and most firms on the Beach are that size. Attackers don't check headcount; they check whether you move money or hold client data.

Can you come to our office?

Yes. We're based on Miami Beach, so on-site visits here are the easiest we do. Day to day, most issues are still faster to fix remotely.
